March 2022. Earlier this month 175 countries voted to begin preparations for a new treaty aimed at regulating and controlling plastics. Environmental damage is plain for all to see, with ecosystems struggling from manmade destruction.
Plastic is everywhere. The clothes we wear, the phones we carry with us 24/7, the packaging used for our food and drinks and most worryingly, in the air we breathe. A recent study found traces of microplastics in the blood of 80% of its anonymous donors.
It’s very easy to take the stance of “well, what difference will I make?” but the truth of the matter is that we are all, in some way, responsible for the fate of our planet.
In an era of sustainability and environmental awareness, we thought we’d share with you the efforts we’re making at Tonic Day Spa when it comes to our suppliers and products.
Those of you who are regulars to the salon will be aware that our main product lines are [ Comfort Zone ] and Image. Both companies’ product ranges are vegan and plastic-free, whilst [ Comfort Zone ] is a certified B Corp organisation. B Corp is a global certification, with its members pledging to meet the highest standards of social and environmental impact.
[ Comfort Zone ] products are officially plastic neutral, proudly, and publicly declaring –
[ comfort zone ] combines a 25-year heritage in the spa industry with constant innovation to provide result-oriented, clean formulas and professional treatments for both face and body. Inspired by the Scientific Garden in the carbon-neutral Davines Village in Parma, Italy, where each [ comfort zone ] product is designed and manufactured, a research team of over 40 chemists, biologists and dermatologists harness the best of science and nature with the support of an international Scientific Committee. The result-driven, vegan formulas are highly concentrated in natural-origin and high-tech ingredients, and free from silicones, animal derivatives, mineral oil, artificial colorants and SLS.
The brand’s eco-designed packaging is 100% recyclable, CO2 offset through reforestation projects and 100% plastic-neutral certified by Plastic Bank.
The latest innovation from [ Comfort Zone ] are their refillable products. The outer packaging, once purchased, is yours. When you run out of product all you need to do is purchase a new cartridge. Pop it into the original container and you’re good to go again.
Another product line popular with our customers are the Spongelle infused body buffers. Commercial off the shelf shower gels normally consist of 90% water and 10% ingredients. Spongellé’s body wash infused buffers are the exact opposite, consisting of 90% ingredients and 10% water! They also have some cracking ideas for reusing and upcycling your buffer when it’s run its course, including in the garden and at the craft table!
A little closer to home, our very own Senses range is helping us to reach our environmental targets. All packaging across the entire range is recyclable and plastic-free. The glass containers and tins can be reused or recycled, and our scented candles are made from soy wax, which burns cleanly and is biodegradable.
We’ve also replaced our batiks on the treatment tables with Scrummi couch covers. As well as being 100% vegan, they are also biodegradable within 8 weeks and fully compostable. This alone has proved to reduce its environmental impact when compared to laundering couch covers, batiks and towels throughout the spa and beauty sector.
If you’ve ever had a facial with us, you’ll have experienced the sponges we use to cleanse your skin. In the spirit of reusing products, we no longer throw these away – we give them to our clients to take away and use at home. They are washable and can last for a surprisingly long time – a much greener solution than disposing of cotton wool every time we give a facial.
And those lovely white Tonic Day Spa carrier bags – yep, they’re manufactured from recycled paper and are fully recyclable (or reusable) once you get them home.
It’s all about reduce, reuse and recycle.
At Tonic Day Spa we believe that if we all play a small part in looking after the environment there will still be an environment for our children, grand-children, and future generations.
If you’d like to switch to a more sustainable skincare regime, we’re happy to advise you on where to start.
