Good, high-quality skincare products are an investment. But with so many to choose from, where do you start? Each product has its different uses, so we thought we’d provide a quick overview of what the main products do for your skin. It’s worth bearing in mind that your skin type can change at various stages of the year, and as we reach different life stages too. If you had ‘normal’ skin in your 30s that may not necessarily be the case if you’re now in your 40s, 50s or beyond.
Cleanser – an essential for your bathroom shelf. A cleanser should be water-soluble and gentle, but also be able to remove make-up. As with all skincare products, there are cleansers to suit different skin types. Use twice daily.
Exfoliator – Exfoliating removes dead skin cells from the surface of your skin, giving your skin a beautiful glow. While exfoliators are extremely useful, they should not be used every day. Use an exfoliator once or twice a week to enjoy the benefits. If you have sensitive skin, an exfoliating mask can be a great alternative to a scrub. Find an exfoliator that works with your skin type and use it at least once a week. This is a fantastic way to put the glow back in dull skin.
Serum – Serum is an important skincare product because it is full of beneficial and active ingredients. Serums have antioxidants and anti-ageing ingredients. This allows your skin to fight free radical damage and stimulate collagen production, leaving your skin healthy and youthful. Serums penetrate the skin at a deep level, allowing the active ingredients to work better and help keep the skin more hydrated. If you want to add serums to your skin care routine, apply it after cleansing your face, before applying moisturiser.
Moisturiser – Moisturiser is a must when it comes to your skincare routine. No matter what type of skin you have, you will be able to find a moisturiser that will work for you. If you choose not to use serum or other skin care products, moisturiser is one that everyone should use! If you think that lotions and moisturisers are the same, we are sorry to tell you that you are wrong. Moisturisers are designed to add essential oils and vitamins back into the skin, which is different from a lotion, which sit on top of the skin and offers different benefits. They are both great products, but if you must pick one over the other, a moisturiser is the better option – and make sure it contains an SPF too to protect your skin from the elements.
Sunscreen – The most important skincare product out there is sunscreen! While other products can help to keep your skin looking and feeling great, sunscreen protects your skin and keeps it healthy. Using sunscreen regularly, and by that, we mean every day, you can help keep your skin looking younger and healthier year after year. Plus, it protects you against harmful UV rays that can cause skin issues and may lead to skin cancer. You can find main moisturisers that contain sunscreen, allowing you to get both benefits in one simple step.
Night Cream – Using a night cream boosts your collagen production, helping your skin to look plumper and firmer. This reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and lessens sagging. In short, the elasticity of your skin is given a much-needed boost.
